Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: John 14:1-2
[Jesus said,] “Don’t be troubled. Trust in God. Trust also in me. My Father’s house has room to spare. If that weren’t the case, would I have told you that I’m going to prepare a place for you?”

Thought for the Day: John’s Gospel says a lot about believing or trusting. The above passage is often translated, Believe in God. Believe also in me. Understanding that the Greek word we translate from the earliest Christian documents as believe or trust is more than simply an exercise in gaining a consensus of knowledge. It suggests surrender or giving one’s self over to another. To believe is to belove and to follow, it is joyfully offering oneself, in this case, to God and to the ways of God. To only claim God exists is not to believe according to the ancient text. Believing is to discover that God is graciously demanding; believing is a radical life change that brings one onto an entirely different path of life.

Prayer: Creator God, help me believe and to believe again and again as I walk this journey of life. Amen.
