Scripture: 2nd Thessalonians 3:6
Brothers and sisters, we command you in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to stay away from every brother or sister who lives an undisciplined life that is not in line with the traditions that you received from us.
Thought for the Day: A single verse of scripture taken out of context could change the whole mission and purpose of Christianity. These are strong words that appear to undermine the call to go forth and make disciples of every nation. Jesus never added a caveat to the Great Commission that excluded the undisciplined (lazy is another way of translating the word) from the missionary venture. He did not say, “Baptize all of them, but feel free to skip those who are lazy.” If anything, Jesus encouraged his disciples to risk everything with his call to take up the cross. Some scholars place 2nd Thessalonians as a later letter, and one probably written by one of Paul’s students. As Christianity was growing and maturing in the first 50 years of its existence, there were many people who claimed to be legitimate preachers and teachers of the “true” faith. It appears as if “every brother or sister who lives an undisciplined life” may not have been every brother or sister, but the many traveling preachers and teachers who were coming into town to mooch off the community. This seems reasonable as the writer goes on to say, “…we worked night and day with effort and hard work so that we would not impose on you. We did this to give you an example to imitate…” The traditions being referenced here are less theological and more practical. There appears to be folks who are using the Christian message as a good gig for getting their basic needs covered. Knowing the context is always important.
Prayer: May I work with diligence and passion for your Kingdom, O Lord. Let the words of my mouth and the work of my hands continue to point to your generous Spirit. Amen.
