Ecclesiological Etchings: 10-11-16

Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: 1 Corinthians 9:22-23
I act weak to the weak, so I can recruit the weak. I have become all things to all people, so I could save some by all possible means. All the things I do are for the sake of the gospel, so I can be a partner with it.

Thought for the Day: The language of servant is often used in the New Testament, especially when it comes to the followers of Jesus. We choose to serve because we follow one who chose to humble himself and serve. There are other images that describe our relationship with God, and here in 1st Corinthians, Paul uses the language of partner. The word here in the Greek is actually two words – the word for fellowship or community and the word for union. It describes someone who is a true companion. In the book of Revelation, John uses the word in 1:9 to describe his relationship to his readers. He writes,

I, John, your brother
who share with you in Jesus
the persecution and the kingdom
and the patient endurance…

To partner with anyone is to hold nothing back. God needs partners who share, not just in the good and easy stuff, but in the demanding and challenging stuff. Let’s seek to be partners with God by means of the modeling seeing in Jesus

Prayer: There is work to be done, and I know you are calling all of us, O Lord. Let me listen carefully to your request, even when it demands something of me. I want to follow you wherever it might take me. Amen.
