Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: 2nd Corinthian 4:16-18
So we aren’t depressed. But even if our bodies are breaking down on the outside, the person that we are on the inside is being renewed every day. Our temporary minor problems are producing an eternal stockpile of glory for us that is beyond all comparison. We don’t focus on the things that can be seen but on the things that can’t be seen. The things that can be seen don’t last, but the things that can’t be seen are eternal.

Thought for the Day: Most younger folks only know Jimmy Dean for his breakfast sausages, but he was quite the actor, musician and author. A few years back, I used the following quote in a sermon. Dean wrote:

I can’t change the direction of the wind, but I can adjust my sails to always reach my destination.

I think many of us are feeling as if the wind has dramatically changed, and it sure feels as if we are being tossed around in ways we do not like. It is understandable, yet I have always been a firm believer in taking control of what you can control when so many things are out of your control. I also believe that a change in the wind does not necessarily require a change in our destination. Despite what some might believe, our changes in worship time and our required flexibility in regard to Sunday School has not hindered our vision or mission as a congregation. Some folks may have confused their specific worship hour or space – their Sunday School hour or space – with the central message of Jesus, but the Gospel remains at the center of who we are. If you missed last night’s Talent Show and Dessert Auction, I am sorry to say that you really missed out. It was a perfect reminder of how the wind may have changed direction, but we remain a community that loves each other and loves the Lord. It was a delightful evening where people gave of themselves with great generosity. We are adjusting our sails, and it can be a little difficult at first, but our destination as a Faith Community is the love first life. And by the way, we raised around $2,200 for our Restoration Work. Hallelujah!

Prayer: Let me keep my spiritual navigation focused upon you, Lord God, even as many forces attempt to spin me around. Amen.
