Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: Exodus 3:13
But Moses said to God, “If I now come to the Israelites and say to them, ‘The God of your ancestors has sent me to you,’ they are going to ask me, ‘What’s this God’s name?’ What am I supposed to say to them…

Thought for the Day: In this scripture, Moses has just been called by God to be the mouthpiece of liberation, to go before Pharaoh and speak on behalf of God. For such a dangerous mission, Moses at least wants to know the name of this God who has called him. The voice in the burning bush says to Moses, “I am who I am.” At first glance it is not the most helpful or insightful name. It only seems to raise more questions – though could that have been God’s hope. Jesus will later say to his disciples, “Ask and you will receive. Seek and you will find. Knock and the door will be opened to you.” Could it be that this is not an invitation to a destination, but to a marvelous and ongoing journey of discovery? Could it be that God wishes for us to never settle on a single human created description of God? Could it be that God is always more, and this God desires for us to be on the lookout for something new?

Prayer: Like an inquisitive child, I wish to ask questions and explore and to be baffled and to grow. God, let me find joy in the ongoing search for you, a search that will only be complete when my soul is united with you at death. Amen.
