Scripture: Proverb 6:23
For the commandment is a lamp and the teaching a light, and the reproofs of discipline are the way of life…
Thought for the Day: As many of you know, I’m a big Nebraska Cornhusker fan. This year has been a rather painful year as my Huskers have not done well. On Saturday, they were playing the highly ranked and very talented Michigan State team who was undefeated and trying to make its way into the college playoffs. With about 15 seconds left in the game, Nebraska scored a go-ahead touchdown on a controversial call. Nebraska won! After the game, Michigan State’s head coach (Mark Dantonio) spoke about the game, and he started by saying: “First thing I want to do is congratulate Coach Riley and Nebraska’s football team. It was an outstanding win and they just kept playing…everybody is going to take responsibility for this…with that being said, you have to credit the people we played against and I don’t think the officiating lost us the game.”
He reference the controversial play, but didn’t allow it to define the game. He gave credit where credit was do, and lifted up many positives for his own team…along with a few things that needed work. I was very impressed by what he had to say, for he did not dwell on any one thing. His words were an amazing teaching moment to a group of young men who were incredibly disappointed with the loss. It was one of those moments when the coach’s words rose above Saturday afternoon football. It was about life, and how there are moments in life where things are not fair, they don’t go as planned, and the end result is determined by something that may not entirely be within our control. We can cry and complain, yet in the end, it doesn’t change anything. In a time when college sports are looking more like professional sports, I appreciate when a college coach takes a difficult moment for a group of young kids (and that’s what they are), and teaches. What a novel concept for a college program.
Prayer: Life has many lessons to be learned, and I seek your assistance, Lord, as I humble myself for the purpose of learning. Amen.
