Scripture: Deuteronomy 8:6-10
Keep the commandments of the LORD your God by walking in his ways and by fearing him, because the LORD your God is bringing you to a wonderful land, a land with streams of water, springs, and wells that gush up in the valleys and on the hills, a land of wheat and barley, vines, fig trees, and pomegranates; a land of olive oil and honey; a land where you will eat food without any shortage—you won’t lack a thing there—a land where stone is hard as iron and where you will mine copper from the hills. You will eat, you will be satisfied, and you will bless the LORD your God in the wonderful land that he’s given you.
Thought for the Day: The land described in this passage from Deuteronomy, the Promised Land, is a place of great abundance. There is so much available for those who live in the land, but notice how the people are not told to live in abundance or squander what is there. Instead, the author’s language is very clear – “you will eat food without any shortage” – “you won’t lack a thing there” – “you will be satisfied”. The land has more than enough, assuming that people are truly satisfied with what they need, not what they want. It will be a land of abundance until the day they people no longer view it as a gift, but instead, take more than is needed. I believe this is difficult for any of us to understand. Human beings have a mindset that tends to be very short sided, thinking selfishly and with no concern for tomorrow. God has a much bigger perspective, and invites us to enjoy what has been provided by creation…to enjoy what we need and not want we want. Such a perspective allows for another generation to speak joyfully about a Promised Land that continues to gush forth with the gifts that are needed.
Prayer: With joyful hearts, we sing praises and songs of thanksgiving unto you, Our Redeemer and Source of Life. Allow us to enjoy respectfully all that life has to offer. Amen.
