Scripture: Isaiah 9:2
The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who lived in a land of deep darkness—on them light has shined.
Thought for the Day: It is strange to suggest that darkness is crushing, but on a few occasions in my life, the darkness felt as if it had significant weight to it. The relentless nature of the “deep darkness’ will grind you down over time. Darkness feeds on itself as it leaves a person feeling helpless, hopeless and alone. Each of these is produced by the darkness and, in turn, each of them produces darkness. It is for this reason that Isaiah speaks of “a great light” that shines about those who walk in darkness. When the darkness is feeding on itself and expanding exponentially, the human soul needs more than a hint or glimmer of light. In deep darkness, it doesn’t take much light to make a difference, but it’s as if Isaiah is suggesting that God doesn’t want to chance it. God is going to do more than light a small candle. Instead, God is going to send a brilliant light that will push out every hint of darkness that might have existed.
Prayer: You do not wish to leave us walking in the darkness, O God of Glory, and so you continue to find magnificent ways of bringing light to the world. In this season of Advent, we shall open our eyes and our hearts to see and experience the brilliance of your gift of light. Amen.
