Scripture: Luke 1:19
The angel replied, “I am Gabriel. I stand in God’s presence. I was sent to speak to you and to bring this good news to you…”
Thought for the Day: When the angelic encounter first occurred, Gabriel needed to calm Zechariah with the well known words, “Do not be afraid!” Once the anxiety had diminished, the conversation continued. It might be an inconsequential item to note, but Gabriel explained how he stands in the presence of God (legitimacy) and how he has been given the task of bringing good news to Zechariah. We all receive some good news now and then. With cooler temperatures, the electric bill has dropped; I took the car in for a strange noise, and it was covered under warranty; the children are all going to be able to join us for Christmas dinner this year; the company is giving a small raise next year. Good news comes in all forms, and it always seems to brighten the day. But let’s be clear – there is good news and then there is good news. The good news from God’s messenger who is privy to all the insider information in the heavenly realm has been sent with some good news. I’m pretty sure the good news Gabriel has to share is going to surpass the savings on the electrical bill this month.
Prayer: During this most holy season of the year, let my ears be attentive. O God whose messengers bring good news, allow for me to hear again a proclamation made to all of creation – past, present and future. Allow me to hear this good news and embrace it. Amen.
