Scripture: Luke 1:66
All who heard about this considered it carefully. They said, “What then will this child be?” Indeed, the Lord’s power was with him.”
Thought for the Day: These words are referring to the one who will grow-up to be John the Baptist. In the above Common English Translation of the scriptures, it says, “…the Lord’s power…” but many other translations say, “…the hand of the Lord…” So is it hand or power? The actual Greek word is cheri, the word for hand. Yet some translators make the assumption, rightfully, that when God’s hand is upon someone there is intent and empowerment for some end goal. This is not like two children in the back seat of the car complaining, “He’s touching me!” When God’s hand rests upon someone, it is not there just to rest. There will be nudging, guiding, and even pushing if necessary. And though I still believe in freewill at the end of the day, I have had moments in my life when the nudge has almost made me physically stumble. It has power.
Prayer: Lord, thank you for John who was guided by you for a faithful task. May all of us be aware of your hand and discern the direction it is attempting to guide. Amen.
