Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: Luke 2:38
She approached at that very moment and began to praise God and to speak about Jesus to everyone who was looking forward to the redemption of Jerusalem.

Thought for the Day: Building on yesterday’s devotional, we find Anna encountering the baby Jesus for the first time. So overwhelmed by this chance meeting, she praised God and went about sharing the news of Jesus. For me, this is a beautiful description of what happens when someone meets Jesus. And when I say meets Jesus, I’m talking about that breathtaking encounter with the relentless and unconditional love of God. Once again, I watched part of a sermon by a brother in Christ who spoke of God’s love, but used tactics of fear and guilt as the foundational message. There are many people out there who are announcing news about Jesus, but their underlying tool is apprehension, if not outright terror. Like the preacher, they might use the word love, but they are not representing the Jesus who demonstrated a love that cast out all fear and anxiety. Part of the Jesus resume’ is the sharing of a love so dramatically different from what most people know as love, and though it is a challenge for most of us, we need to continually strive to reveal a love that resembles God’s relentless and unconditional love.

Prayer: May the joy I know from your love be the joy I demonstrate to others. O God of Amazing  Love, let the means by which I share your love always embody the true nature of your love. Amen.
