Ecclesiological Etchings

Prayer for the Week: We hear your invitation, Lord God. It meets us as a whisper that appears to have no source; it comes upon us in the rustling of leaves along a path; it is felt upon our skin like a warm breath revealing your presence. In other moments, your invitation is a bit more concrete and mundane. It comes in an email that entices our curiosity; it is met in a fellow church member who simply asks for some help; it appears in a church-wide request to assist in a mission project. You are always inviting us into the journey of discipleship and to be about the work of your kingdom. Where our giftedness meets the genuine needs of the world, let the excuses or the insecurities within us slip away. Give us the courage needed to provide a faithful, “Here I am, Lord. I am ready. Send me.” Continue to remind us, O Loving God, of how your invitation to follow and serve almost always requires that we relinquish something we have valued. To follow you and the ways set forth by Jesus, we must learn to unfollow certain sources of power that yield unhealthy authority over our lives. Let the turn we make to follow you be a turn that does not waver. Provide us a true sense of purpose as our gifts find their reason for existence. And let me find partners in this good work – sisters and brothers who are equally passionate about honoring you, Lord, as we humbly serve others together. This we pray in the name of Jesus, the model of sacrificial service. Amen.
