Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: Luke 6:39
Jesus also told them a riddle. “A blind person can’t lead another blind person, right? Won’t they both fall into a ditch?

Thought for the Day: These words are from today’s sermon text. Some translations say parable, and others translate the word as riddle. When I read the word riddle, I can only picture a guy in a green suit with a big question mark on the front (the Riddler, a nemesis of Batman). However it is translated, it feel so very obvious. You can just imagine people rolling their eyes and saying in the tone of a teenager, “Of course not!” These words appear connected to earlier comments against judgment. Does the command to not judge mean there is no right or wrong? Does it mean there is no need for a teacher who will challenge us on how to live our lives in a more healthy and faithful way? In reading the previous ideas alongside this one, I find Jesus encouraging personal responsibility. Don’t sit around critiquing other people’s lives. Instead, take responsibility for yourself. In doing so, you will begin to live a life of integrity that might just become a challenging model for others who are in need of a change.

Prayer: Give me eyes to see clearly where it is that I need to change. I ask you, O Lord, to be the judge over my life for the purpose of modifying or refashioning those areas that do not exemplify your love. Thank you for being the gracious judge who only wants the best for me and for the world around me. Amen.
