Scripture: Proverbs 26:24-25
Hateful people mislead with their lips, keeping their deception within. Though they speak graciously, don’t believe them, for seven horrible things are in their heart.
Thought for the Day: Being consistent, through and through, was central to Biblical Wisdom. We might call it integrity, while religion might use words like righteousness or virtue. Whatever the case, people of faith are encouraged to be gap-less. That’s my word, and what I mean when I use the word gap-less is simply this – whenever we allow for a gap to exist within us, we create space for all kinds of unhealthy and even dangerous influences to slip in. The “seven horrible things” referenced in the above passage are spelled out in Proverbs 6:16-19. This is where we find a description using the metaphor of the human body to describe the seven horrible things (abominations) that can so easily make their way into our lives. The word integrity comes from the Latin that means wholeness or completeness. It basically means to be intact. Now we will probably never be fully gap-less (intact), but the life of faith should be, among other things, the ongoing work of finding greater wholeness and completeness where we do not have gaps within us – gaps between what we claim to believe and how we live our lives.
Prayer: Bind me together, O God of Creation, that I might be the whole human being – mind, body, spirit – that you created me to be. Amen.
