Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: Jeremiah 1:4-6
The LORD’s word came to me: “Before I created you in the womb I knew you; before you were born I set you apart; I made you a prophet to the nations.” “Ah, LORD God,” I said, “I don’t know how to speak because I’m only a child.”

Thought for the Day: What’s your go-to excuse? Sadly, I probably don’t have one…instead, I have a half dozen or so go-to excuses. For some folks, excuses are just a way of life. Subconsciously people offer excuses before they even have a chance to think through what has been asked. This happens for a multitude of reasons, including fear and insecurity (and the occasional laziness). Jeremiah had a quick excuse, though in thinking about the context, I can’t blame him. His excuse actually makes more sense than the one I would have proposed. This is all to suggest that as followers of Jesus, we need to be mindful of those underlying issues within us that determine our reaction before we even know we have reacted. What does it mean to trust God when called. It doesn’t mean that God will keep us safe and content and happy every step of the way. It means we get the opportunity to be faithful to the Gospel of Jesus Christ. That should be enough.

Prayer: Let my lips and life give witness to my trust in you, O Gracious God who calls me to follow and serve the one who gave us reason to follow and serve, Jesus Christ. Amen.
