Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: Psalm 46:1
God is our refuge and strength, a help always near in times of great trouble.

Thought for the Day: In his wonderful book, Falling Upward, Richard Rohr writes, “Before the truth sets you free, it tends to make you miserable.” I believe Rohr hits a home run with this insight as it helps those trying to be faithful amidst continued struggle. The above verse from Psalm 46 has been quoted by many, yet I often hear it used by those who are imposing it upon others who are up to their eyeballs in trouble. Let’s be honest, that’s not always helpful. The verse sounds more like a mantra said over and over again in hopes of eventually coming to the place where it can be embraced. I believe the path toward life and freedom in the Spirit is much bumpier than many might think. The difficulty is often imposed from the outside, but there are times when it is self imposed as we struggle to let go of old ways that do not align with this new path.

Prayer: Keep me going, O Gracious God. Continue to be the voice of encouragement as I make my way forward in life. I acknowledge you as refuge and strength even when life is messy. Amen.
