Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: Romans 8:6
The attitude that comes from selfishness leads to death, but the attitude that comes from the Spirit leads to life and peace.

Thought for the Day: Selfishness, a life that focuses on the self, is always going to be limited and narrow in its perspective. By its very nature, selfishness is short-sidedness and an incomplete perspective. An attitude that comes from the Spirit is an attitude that comes from outside ourselves, and thus has a much greater perspective. It’s interesting that Paul does not say that a selfish attitude will lead to the death of the selfish individual, but to death in general. Selfishness, may in fact protect the selfish individual, while leaving others to suffer and die. The attitude of the Spirit is to see others for who they really are, and from that vantage point, we begin living for others in such a way that we will help provide life and peace for them. Paul was eventually executed for taking on the attitude of the Spirit, yet his choice provided life and peace to others. And though executed for his faith, I’m pretty sure Paul would say that he too found true life and peace through this Spirit attitude and perspective.

Prayer: As hard as it can be, O Giver of the Spirit, may I take on that attitude and perspective that comes with this gift. It is only then that I can begin living for you and for the sake of others. Amen.
