Ecclesiological Etchings

Prayer for the Week: We claim to be Christian, but we do not always follow in the ways of Jesus. We call ourselves Christians, but what we say on social media does not always reflect the love of Jesus. We call ourselves Christians, but we too often demonize the very people with whom Jesus spent his time. We call ourselves Christians, but we do not always choose to reflect your gift, O Merciful and Gracious God. Religion is relatively easy, but you did not invite us to join a religion. We too often seek a list of rules and a statement of belief, but Jesus invited us into a way of living. Forgive us when we choose the road well traveled by those who seek the so-called benefits of the title Christian, but have no desire for Christ’s Spirit to dwell within them. Your love welcomes us and heals us, but the depth and beauty of your love also challenges us to the core of our being. I ask you, Lord God, to help me answer the question: Does my life represent Jesus and his self-sacrificing love? I know perfection will never be achieved, but I desire to hear you declare, “Well done, good and faithful servant,” and not, “You squeaked by on grace.” In all of this, Merciful and Gracious God, I ask you to provide me with one specific thing I can do this day to clearly represent you and your love to the world. Amen.
