Scripture: Romans 8:1
So now there isn’t any condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.
Thought for the Day: St. John Chrysostom said that the church is a hospital, not a courtroom for souls. The church does not condemn the sin, but grants remission of sins. When is the church going to learn this important point? There have been so many things we have arrogantly declared as sin throughout the centuries, things for which we have killed, only to learn later that it was the misguided sin of judgment. When will we learn that is not our place to judge or condemn?
The above passage is usually quoted in gratitude to God, for God has not condemned us. This is a good way of looking at the passage, but somewhat incomplete. We celebrate the fact that God has not condemned us, but there is to be no condemnation within those who are connected to Jesus Christ. Judging, castigating and disparaging others are not the actions of those who follow in the ways of Christ.
Prayer: Help me to spend less time in an attitude of judgement, and more in an attitude that represents your grace, O Lord. May my life help others to feel your love and hospitality. Amen.
