Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture:  Romans 12:2
Don’t be conformed to the patterns of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your minds so that you can figure out what God’s will is—what is good and pleasing and mature.

Thought for the Day: I know it is my opinion, but I believe this is one of the most important things the Apostle Paul wrote. I like the Common English Translation, specifically not conforming to the patterns of this world. Whether we name it or not, we are creatures who like structure and seek patterns in life. The structure and patterns of our life define our thinking and our living, and if they don’t reinforce the very basics of our faith, our discerning will not lead us to God’s will. It will lead us don’t paths that support someone else’s agenda… usually an agenda that is seeking something from you. The patterns of daily prayer, weekly worship, times of silence, the reading of scripture, humble service and the study of Christ-like figures help to create a structure in our lives that keep us focused on God. And if focused on God, we have a better chance of keeping the patterns of this world at bay.

Prayer: There is always more time for you, O Lord, even when I’ve convinced myself otherwise. There seems to be time for tv, sports, recreation, nonsense, cruising the internet and buying more emojis. Give me reason to pause and to change a pattern in my life that does not honor you. Amen.
