Scripture: Number 22:28
Then the LORD opened the donkey’s mouth and it said to Balaam, “What have I done to you that you’ve beaten me these three times?”
Thought for the Day: There are way too many jokes about the donkey (the ass) speaking to Balaam, but if you wish, you can find a few by doing a quick search on the internet. Did God speak through donkeys and other animals in days gone by? Was it a common practice for a while, but in more recent years, God has chosen other vehicles? Personally, I have never had an animal speak to me or even heard of such a happening. Oh don’t get me wrong, many pet owners will give examples of how their beloved four legged friend communicated with them. And I am very willing to agree, but I don’t believe there are recent examples of it happening in proper English. Is this a story of a historic event, or is it a prophetic parable of sorts by which the author suggests the many odd and strange ways God communicates? I’m not going to answer the question, except to say that in either case, shouldn’t the point be for us to make ourselves available for God’s mercy and love to be communicated in the most unexpected of places and ways? In the parable of the Good Samaritan, God’s unconditional love was made real in a Samaritan… the least likely of individuals to be considered as a agent of God’s message. Where has God knocked your socks off with a Mr. Ed kind of moment?
Prayer: Though I do not look for a talking donkey, O God whose love is always being revealed, I do open up all my senses that I might encounter your message revealed. Amen.
