Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: 1 John 4:7
Dear friends, let’s love each other, because love is from God, and everyone who loves is born from God and knows God.

Thought for the Day: Is it that simple? After one of the recent shootings that left multiple people dead, I saw someone online suggest that the only answer was for us to love one another. Such an answer is probably not going to receive too much disagreement, unless it comes from folks who find it as empty as saying to the families of the deceased, “You’ll be in our thoughts and prayers.” I believe positive thoughts and prayers are important and impactful, but those thoughts should include deep reflection and those prayers should discern God’s will. But in case you don’t have enough time to reflect and pray, I’ll give you the short answer – Let us love each other. Not that empty self-serving dribble that is often promoted as love. We don’t need any more of it. What we need is true self-sacrificing love that seeks to serve the other. I have even referred to this love as reckless, for that is what love will appear to be from one who doesn’t know the example of Jesus Christ. If you’re confused on some of the strange and even bizarre passages of scripture, that’s ok. Most of us have some of that, but as long as you strive to put love first in all things (not just the easy or rewarding or self-serving, but all things), you’re going to be just fine.

Prayer: I’m going to try to make this as simple as possible – help me, O Loving God, to resemble your love in all that I do. Amen.
