Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: Zechariah 4:6
He answered me: “This is the LORD’s word to Zerubbabel: Neither by power, nor by strength, but by my spirit, says the LORD of heavenly forces.”

Thought for the Day: These words come from a divine messenger who is speaking to the Prophet Zechariah. The messenger removes any chance that Zechariah or other people could take credit for the vision, its interpretation or its fulfillment. This all belongs to the Spirit. Does this mean Zechariah and Zerubbabel (the leader of the people) are passive observers? I don’t believe so. I see the Spirit being the inspiration and animating force for those who are faithful to God’s call. The people don’t take credit, but they do take action. This coming Sunday, I will talk some about the power of the Spirit – specifically, what I will call Spirit-Filled Momentum. Cypress Creek Christian Church appears to have a bit of a tailwind if you will. The Spirit is always moving, but there are times when the environment and the people are more available to that powerful presence. There are defining moments in the life of a church, and I don’t want to pretend that everything depends upon this moment. At the same time, I believe the opportunity is alive with the Spirit’s movement. Will we continue to allow ourselves to be caught in its flow?

Prayer: May the Spirit continue to guide and uplift what we do. O Spirit of the Living God, fall afresh upon us; move us with your power; infuse us with your passion. Amen.

SEE YOU SUNDAY
