Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: Micah 7:8
Do not rejoice over me, O my enemy; when I fall, I shall rise; when I sit in darkness, the Lord will be a light to me.

Thought for the Day: At almost every moment in history when a group has been oppressed or experienced great suffering, there have been writings that offered hope even when there appeared to be no hope. Such writings not only provided a measure of hope to the hopeless, but these writings also provided a sense of empowerment when individuals felt powerless. Satirical essays, political parody and cultural caricatures have all been used. The above words are more direct, but you can almost imagine those who heard these words finding some strength that they did not know they had. They feel some buoyancy when before they only felt the heaviness of torment and injustice. The arts, including the written word, can provide us a lifeline to a world very different from our current reality. It’s not escapism, but empowerment toward a goal. It is not naïveté, but an inspirational picture of the future that can move even those who feel hopelessly stuck.

Prayer: Continue to inspire, O Spark of Life, those with a gift to write or paint, sculpt or dance. Allow for their inspired works to create a life-line to a world not yet realized, but a world you are continuing to put before us. This I request in the name of Christ Jesus. Amen.
