Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: Luke 6:1-3
One Sabbath, as Jesus was going through the wheat fields, his disciples were picking the heads of wheat, rubbing them in their hands, and eating them. Some Pharisees said, “Why are you breaking the Sabbath law?” Jesus replied, “Haven’t you read what David and his companions did when they were hungry?”

Thought for the Day: I believe scripture is both contextual and able to speak beyond its original context. In fact, Jesus demonstrates how the context of a much older scripture is both understood within its original context and then able to speak beyond its original context. This requires the work of the human imagination and God’s Spirit. Now that doesn’t mean scripture can say anything, but I do believe there is a forward movement found within scripture that is not intended to be halted simply because we finish reading scripture. If we’ve allowed ourselves to be caught-up in the movement of scripture, we can be carried forward into the new things God wishes to see accomplished. Some of the religious leaders were hoping to solidify and fossilize scripture in one moment of time. That’s very handy, but faith is always more than a reliving of the past. Don’t get me wrong – there is plenty to be learned from history. But the path forward, if it is to be God’s path, will also lead us toward greater understandings of love, justice, mercy and compassion.

Prayer: As I learn more about you from the scriptures, O God of the Sabbath, may your Spirit help me to perceive how the life of Jesus can speak to situations simply unimagined in scripture. Amen.
