Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: Psalm 34:4
I sought the LORD and he answered me. He delivered me from all my fears.

Thought for the Day: Yesterday was an important date in American history. For most of us, September 11th is one of those dates where we can tell friends exactly where we were when we heard the news. I chose not to write on that subject yesterday because I wanted to reflect on September 12th. Thinking back, I encountered so many different emotions in those days that followed, but in a personal reflection on September 13, I wrote the following:

In the last 36 hours, I have met those who are overwhelmed with fear; I have met those who can’t stop crying; I have met those who are already articulating plans for revenge. Those emotions are present and real, but the most common response I have encountered has been in the form of a question: What can we do to help?

Throughout history, Christians have made the most impact on society in times of crisis, especially when they offered a radical alternative. These radical alternatives might have seemed radical and unexpected within the culture, but when you’re a Jesus follower, they are just what Jesus would do.

Prayer: Society tugs at us and expects us to act and react a certain way. But you, Lord, have given us a mentor and a model in Jesus. May we learn from him and follow him. Amen.
