Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: Luke 7:36
One of the Pharisees invited Jesus to eat with him. After he entered the Pharisee’s home, he took his place at the table.

Thought for the Day: The word Pharisee has its own soundtrack. Each time it is spoken, you expect to hear: Dun, dun, dun! Or maybe some hissing and boos. The word Pharisee has become a caricature which is not good, for though there were some among the religious establishment who lost grace amidst legalism, it wasn’t all of them. There were Pharisees and other religious leaders of the day who understood God’s grace, or were at least curious in regard to this Jesus guy. Now let’s be clear, I’m so far from perfect that I can’t even imagine getting within close proximity of perfect, but there are plenty of clergy with whom I do not wish to be associated. And I fear that too often we have been lumped together, like all the Pharisees were lumped together. An invitation to a meal was a sign of respect, and even if the Pharisee had some disagreements with Jesus, there was something about sitting down together over a good meal and wine. How much better would our world be if we found places to eat with folks who may not pass all our litmus tests, but because we shared a meal, we might come to respect, enjoy and appreciate one another in spite of the differences? For me, this is what we model at the Communion Table, especially within our diverse denomination. I believe the Lord’s Supper could become a help in solving a lot of the nasty division and dysfunction within our culture.

Prayer: Let me hear your invitation made in grace, O Lord. Let me hear not only the invitation extended to me, but even those with whom I disagree…even those I do not like. For it to be grace, it must be given equally to all. In fact, I must acknowledge how I might be the one who is less Christ-like. Amen.
