Scripture: 1st Peter 2:5
You yourselves are being built like living stones into a spiritual temple. You are being made into a holy priesthood to offer up spiritual sacrifices that are acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.
Thought for the Day: The image of a stone was used in the previous verse in reference to Jesus, but here we are described as being built like living stones. The Greek word we translate as stone is not like a rock we might pick-up alongside the road, but one already carved and prepared for building. The stone has been specifically shaped to fit a specific place. This is interesting, for the stone imagery first reminds us how we resemble Jesus, and then we learn how we have been prepared in a unique way to help build a spiritual temple. It is doubtful the author is speaking of creating a real building, but the creating of a body with a specific mission that is defined and embodied in sacrificial living. The most beautiful part of this body, the church, is when it resembles Jesus by living out love sacrificially. In those moments, the world pauses to take notice of this amazing spiritual house with all its diverse pieces fitting together with a purpose that is changing the world.
Prayer: Continue to work on me, O Great Creator. Continue to shape me so that I fit where I am needed. Continue to remove the rough edges so that my life may participate in revealing your glorious gift of love, Jesus Christ. Amen.
