Scripture: Hebrews 12:28
Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that can’t be shaken, let’s continue to express our gratitude. With this gratitude, let’s serve in a way that is pleasing to God with respect and awe…
Thought for the Day: Yesterday, I suggested that scripture, with some exceptions, doesn’t make a connection between gratitude and service. This passage from Hebrews is one of the exceptions. According to the writer, things are changing – the creation itself is experiencing a major shake-up that will reveal what needs to be revealed. Though we are shaken ourselves, we should not be concerned as we will be recipients of the new thing that emerges from this shake-up. In fact, we do not sit and wait for the shake-up to conclude. We are those who, with gratitude, serve in such a way that God is pleased. The author doesn’t take it quite as far as I will suggest, but I tend to think that it is our life of service that brings about some of that shake-up. Think about the way Jesus lived his life. The relentless and radical love he showed shook many to the core, and this way of living was the cause of his execution. What are ways your life is shaking up the world around you for the sake of God’s kingdom of love?
Prayer: As I live your love more fully each day, O God, I believe this life of love will be an agent of genuine change within my community, the culture and creation itself. Amen.
