Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: Luke 1:41
When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the child leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit.

Thought for the Day: There is a lot of movement in this story. In the previous verse (referenced in yesterday’s devotional), it said that Mary “got up and hurried…” to the home of her relative, Elizabeth. The word we translate as “got up” is the same word we find throughout the Gospel, including the last chapter where Jesus is described as the one who “arose” from the dead. It is a term of resurrection, and the news that Mary had just heard gave birth to a whole new life for her. And then when the two women met, as Mary spoke, the child within Elizabeth leapt. It is the common response to new life, and even the unborn John sensed this new life in such a way that he couldn’t keep still. We once again approach the celebration of God’s love being born anew into the world. May this gift of love bring forth life within us, and as this new life comes again, it will most definitely be followed by some leaping.

Prayer: My spirit leaps with joy, O Giver of New Life. Thank you for your Spirit that took on  flesh and made real your love that is given without condition. Amen.

See You In Worship
