Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: Luke 1:49
…for the Mighty One has done great things for me, and holy is his name.

Thought for the Day: This is a continuation of Mary’s song, the Magnificat, that was referenced yesterday. God is referred to as the Mighty One. When I think of God as the Mighty One, I think in terms of power, strength and muscle. The Greek word we translate as Mighty is the word Dunatos. It is the same word that appears in Romans 12 where Paul writes: If possible, to the best of your ability, live at peace with all people. It is the word possible. Dunatos has less to do with strength as if we’re talking about brawn, and more to do with potential. What does it mean to speak of God in terms of the One who is full of potential and possibility. For Mary who is looking into a very uncertain future, it must have been reassuring to believe God, the One full of possibilities, was with her. God’s possibilities may not necessarily be what we are expecting, but these God possibilities reach beyond the normal imagination…beyond what we might perceive as a dead end. Don’t you imagine such an idea would have been comforting to Mary.

Prayer: May your mighty possibilities, O Lord, be a source of hope when shadows  encroach upon our lives and limit our capacity to see a way forward. Amen.
