Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: John 1:6-7
There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. He came as a witness to testify to the light, so that all might believe through him.

Thought for the Day: God has a habit of sending a forerunner, an announcer or envoy who prepares the way. John the Baptist, the son of Elizabeth and Zechariah, does the necessary work to make the world more receptive to the gift of God’s light that is to come. The Greek word we translate as witness is where we get our English word, martyr. So often those who are sent ahead will lose their head (John will eventually be executed by decapitation). Of course, it wasn’t just John who was called upon to witness and testify to this light. As disciples of Jesus, we all are offering ourselves to this work. God help us…

Prayer: Keep me faithful to the work of honoring you, O Light of the World, through my witness and testimony. Amen.
