Prayer for the Week:
Holy Light, you were born in a stable and placed in a feeding trough. Your first visitors brought with them a flock of sheep to your makeshift nursery, while rambling on about angels and heavenly choirs. Your story is wonderfully quirky, disturbingly mysterious. Some have suggested the placement of your nativity was to reveal your humble temperament, yet too often such discussions romanticize poverty and fear. Let us not glamorize the setting or attempt to adorn the situation with a few sparkly decorations. It was neither quaint or cute, yet it has the power to announce your hope and love into the universe. Wherever people have attempted to curb your capacity to enter a storyline, arguing that it was far beyond redemption, let us return to the manger where the power of your existence proclaimed that such a place does not exist. Take us to the stable once again, and allow us to witness the unfolding of the disconcerting narrative of Good News. O Holy Light, let us sit alongside the shepherds and other misfits who found their place in your story. Amen.
