Scripture: Ephesians 5:18
Don’t get drunk on wine, which produces depravity. Instead, be filled with the Spirit in the following ways…
Thought for the Day: I chose not to jump to the next few verses of scripture where Paul offers us examples of how to be filled with the Spirit because I wanted to focus on not getting drunk. As many of you have heard me say, I grew-up with grandparents who were fans of Carrie Nation – the strong armed, hatchet carrying, voice of the temperance movement. At the same time, I saw within my family drinking that was done responsibly. Coming off a holiday where too many people made the poor choice to drive drunk, I hope we can be voices and examples of responsibility and proactive thoughtfulness. We try to teach our children to think before they act, but how many of us have pushed the limit of our drinking and then got behind the wheel of a car. This isn’t intended to make anyone feel guilty, but to simply push us to be mindful of how that one extra drink might end in tragedy …or it might be the unintended education of our children that leads to tragedy among their generation.
Prayer: As a follower of your gift, Jesus Christ, let me be mindful of how every thing I do is a teaching moment. May the choices I make be a call for responsibility and respect, not with some haughty attitude, but with a genuine love of all my sisters and brothers. Amen.
