Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: Proverb 22:4
The reward for humility and fear of the Lord is riches and honor and life.

Thought for the Day: If you’re not a college football fan, you may have missed the Michigan vs. Michigan State game on Saturday. It is a great in-state rivalry, and it looked as if Michigan had the game won. On the last play of the game, Michigan chose to punt, and it should have been a simple thing…but everything fell apart. The ball was fumbled, and not only did Michigan State recover the fumble, but they returned it for a game-winning touchdown with no time remaining. In the hours after the loss, the Michigan punter received all kinds of mean-spirited comments on social media, including a death threat.  I appreciated how the  Athletic Director at Michigan responded. In is letter, he said:

I’m asking that our community not lose this game twice
by condoning thoughtless comments…

In another ballpark, our TCU (remember that it is a Disciples of Christ university) was playing Iowa State, and at the coin toss, a young Iowa State fan in wheelchair was brought out as a special guest. All the players casually greeted her, but TCU quarterback, Trevone Boykin, knelt down and asked her name. Moments before this very important game, a young man whose name is being mentioned as a potential Heisman candidate, took the time to demonstrate that football isn’t everything.

A week earlier, TCU came back to beat Kansas State.  The Head Coach of KSU, Bill Snider, was so impressed with Trevone Boykin – both on and off the field – that he sent him a handwritten note that started:

Congratulations again Trevone.
Proud of you as a Person and Leader
as well as a great player…

In a time when many college players find their egos overpowering their commonsense (and let me confess that if I was a college player getting all kinds of attention and accolades, I’d have a hard time keeping my ego in check), it is wonderful to see people who put sports and competition in their proper place. It takes real intentionality to choose humility when everyone is praising your name, and I celebrate both Boykin and Snider for pointing the way.

Prayer: Lord, even when my moment in the limelight happens, I seek your assistance in keeping me grounded and humble. I want my life to exhibit the ways of Jesus. Amen.
