Scripture: Job 6:18-20
The caravans turn aside from their course; they go up into the waste, and perish. The caravans of Tema look, the travelers of Sheba hope. They are disappointed because they were confident; they come there and are confounded.
Thought for the Day: On this day in 1954, the American League approved the transfer of the Philadelphia Athletics baseball team to Kansas City, MO, though the Athletics stayed in Kansas City for only 14 seasons. This was a major disappointment for the Kansas City fans who had seen professional baseball in their city since 1883. There was great outrage, and a US Senator from Missouri got involved and pressured Major League Baseball to grant Kansas City a new team. That’s what gave birth to the current World Champions, the Kansas City Royals.
Most of us, when we experience disappointment, do not have the powers of government to threaten those who caused our disappointment. In fact, most of us must deal with it alone. As Proverbs 13:12 says, “Unrelenting disappointment leaves you heartsick…” (the Message). In the above passage, Job speaks harshly against his so-called friends who have not been a source of nourishment in his time of difficulty. In fact, they have compounded his disappointment.
When we do not have great powers who are willing to come to our side, and our friends have left us high and dry, it is good to know that God remains faithful in our double-disappointment. God is our redeemer and source of possibility when disappointment wants to immobilize us. God never disappoints us.
Prayer: Lord, when disappointment attempts to drain me, provide the grace that allows me to see beyond all that attempts to dampen my spirit. Amen.
