Scripture: Luke 9:46-49
An argument arose among them as to which one of them was the greatest. But Jesus, aware of their inner thoughts, took a little child and put it by his side, and said to them, “Whoever welcomes this child in my name welcomes me, and whoever welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me; for the least among all of you is the greatest.”
Thought for the Day: I spoke of this a year ago, but for some reason, this old African Proverb seemed relevant to me again. It says, “When two elephants wrestle, the grass is what suffers.” The big egos among the disciples were arguing over who was the greatest, and Jesus could see where this haughty discussion would lead. He knew that arrogance rarely hurts the arrogant, but often leaves the little ones crushed under its weight. Wouldn’t it be much nicer to see two people arguing over who was most gracious and humble: “You’re so much more gracious!” “Oh no, you’re so much more gracious and kind.”
Prayer: As you humbled yourself for my sake, O Lord, may I humble myself for the sake of your kingdom. Amen.
