Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: Amos 5:2-24
Take away from me the noise of your songs; I will not listen to the melody of your harps. But let justice roll down like waters, and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream.

Thought for the Day: The Hebrew Prophets were never very gentle, yet it was their God-given task to speak the truth even when it was not popular. Amos confronted those who enjoyed singing songs about God’s justice and righteousness, but didn’t really want to do much to actually see such things realized. The work of God’s justice requires us, as Amos suggests, to do some irrigation work. It is God’s justice, but it is realized through us.

On this Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday, I share these words:
Human progress is neither automatic nor inevitable…
Every step toward the goal of justice
requires sacrifice, suffering, and struggle;
the tireless exertions and passionate concern
of dedicated individuals.

Prayer: God who desires true justice within every aspect of your creation, we pause on this day to ask tough questions about our own lives. Through Christ, we have discovered your unconditional love and mercy, but in that discovery, we also realize that these gifts were intended for all. May your many prophets and servants remind us of that call. Amen.
