Scripture: Romans 7:24 I’m a miserable human being. Who will deliver me from this dead corpse? Thought for the Day: This is one of those questions you ask on a bad day, yet for Paul, it was the necessary starting place for understanding the grace of God made real in Jesus Christ. Though like a number of things, an idea trying to make its point can create unforeseen
Scripture: Romans 6:23 The wages that sin pays are death, but God’s gift is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Thought for the Day: If you have been around me much, then you have heard this before. I believe it is both important and essential to understand the word Aionios (Greek word translated as Eternal). Christians are very focused on eternal life as it relates to what
Scripture: Romans 6:14 Sin will have no power over you, because you aren’t under Law but under grace. Thought for the Day: Those are some pretty bold words. To suggest that mistakes, blunders and outright violations of our relationship with God will not have power over us sounds a little too good to be true. Why not continue to move forward with more and more mistakes, blunders and
Scripture: Romans 6:5 If we were united together in a death like his, we will also be united together in a resurrection like his. Thought for the Day: So often this passage is understood as a description of being united with Jesus in an eternal resurrection beyond this life, but for Paul, he is talking about a transformation of an individual in this life. Scripture: Romans 5:6-8 For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. Indeed, rarely will anyone die for a righteous person—though perhaps for a good person someone might actually dare to die. But God proves his love for us in that while we still were sinners Christ died for us. Thought for the Day: This is why Romans is such an amazing
Scripture: Romans 3:29-30 Or is God the God of Jews only? Isn’t God the God of Gentiles also? Yes, God is also the God of Gentiles. Since God is one, then the one who makes the circumcised righteous by faith will also make the one who isn’t circumcised righteous through faith. Scripture: Romans 3:21-22 But now God’s righteousness has been revealed apart from the Law, which is confirmed by the Law and the Prophets. God’s righteousness comes through the faithfulness of Jesus Christ for all who have faith in him. There’s no distinction. Thought for the Day: After yesterday’s downer of a passage, this is where Paul is able to make the Good News shine. I love the language
Scripture: Romans 3:10-12 As it is written, There is no righteous person, not even one. There is no one who understands. There is no one who looks for God. They all turned away. They have become worthless together. There is no one who shows kindness. There is not even one. Thought for the Day: Jonathan Edwards was a famous preacher from the First Great Awakening. One of his
Scripture: Romans 2:28-29 It isn’t the Jew who maintains outward appearances who will receive praise from God, and it isn’t people who are outwardly circumcised on their bodies. Instead, it is the person who is a Jew inside, who is circumcised in spirit, not literally. That person’s praise doesn’t come from people but from God. Thought for the Day: This is a passage that provides some insight into
