Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: 1 Corinthians 13:12
For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then we will see face to face. Now I know only in part; then I will know fully, even as I have been fully known.

Thought for the Day: After Paul’s beautiful description of what Christ-like love looks like, he transitions into a now and then discussion. Paul, who believes he knows Christ and the Gospel of Christ, still suggests that what he knows now is incomplete. There will be a time in the new age when things will be clear, as if we are looking face to face with God. It is a beautiful image, and I have often found myself drawing comfort from those words. At the same time, I do not want to emphasize the then over the now, or at the expense of the now. Even though it is like looking through a mirror, dimly, there is still plenty to see. I will not allow my incomplete knowledge to be an excuse for failing to do the best I can. Oh sure, there will be plenty of failures along the way. Avoiding failure is only an experience of those who never try.

Prayer: Continue to encourage my stretching and learning, Lord God. I know I will always see things incompletely, yet your grace will allow me to love beyond what I could do on my own. Amen.
