Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: Jeremiah 24:7
I will give them a heart to know that I am the Lord; and they shall be my people and I will be their God, for they shall return to me with their whole heart.

Thought for the Day: I was reading an article/blogpost about millennials and vulnerability. According to this author, Chris Martin, there is a general openness to being vulnerable among millennials. In fact, there is an expectation to work toward “authentic community,” yet according to the author, the vulnerability is often a facade. The author writes that there is really no desire to “actually wade through the discomfort of sanctification toward a life of repentance.” We are all good at sitting around and telling the embarrassing stories, offering up our failures and sinfulness, but let’s not venture down the road of real confession that requires change. Vulnerability is not the destination. Real transformation is the goal, and it requires not only the confessions of a person who is vulnerable, but the desire to return with one’s whole heart to the ways of God. The author concludes the article with the words, “It’s okay to not be okay, but it’s not okay to stay that way.”

Prayer: Confession that does not have me turning away from that which I have confessed is not the confession you, O Merciful God, desire. Turn me around. Align me more fully with your ways. I ask this with an open and receptive heart. Amen.
