Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: Mark 11:7
They [the two disciples] brought the colt to Jesus and threw their clothes upon it, and he sat on it.

Thought for the Day: Every Palm Sunday, I have read about the disciples putting their clothes on the animal Jesus was to ride. To be honest, I never really thought much of it, yet as I reflect on my devotional from a couple of days ago, it sure appears as another contrast to the arrogant and powerful spectacle put on by the Roman authority on the other side of town. Jesus didn’t have a stylish saddle or even a beautiful riding blanket. The clothing of the disciples was probably filthy and thin. It reminds me of a friend back in college days who had an old car. The seats were so torn up that he had pulled an extra large sweatshirt over the upright part of the seat and created a pillow made of old denim as his seat. Looking inside the car, it was a pit. Jesus didn’t pause and demand the finest of leather riding tools or ornate cloth to cushion his ride. He kept it basic so that no one might confuse the magnificent message being communicate in the humble act.

Prayer: Let me keep focused on your gift, O Lord, that is preparing to ride into Jerusalem. Let my eyes see him and let my heart discern his message. Amen.
