Scripture: Luke 6:35
But love your enemies, do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return. Your reward will be great, and you will be children of the Most High; for he is kind to the ungrateful and the wicked.
Thought for the Day: “Danger, Will Robinson! Danger!” I loved the old tv series, Lost in Space. It actually came out a year before I was born, but I watched many reruns in the mid-to-late 70’s. The robot’s warning, along with Dr. Smith who was known to announce, “We’re doomed” continued to present a sense of panic and anxiety. Well with what I’m about to say, some of you may join the robot and Dr. Smith with shouts of warning and danger. This morning, I am preaching on the intersection of politics and Christianity. I did not say the intersection of politics and religion, but politics and Christianity. And if you think you are going to hear a sermon where I will rally the community around some political party or platform, you will most definitely be disappointed. In knowing that, I hope you will still come. In the current political landscape, Christians have lost their identity. Christianity has allowed itself to become a tool, an agent of blessing and even a spokesperson for political views that may or may not look very Christian. Again, there is no one out there whose hands are clean on this one. We need to be honest, and then ask the question about Jesus and what he taught. And then ask a rather daring question. The question is not: Who would Jesus vote for? The question is: How would Jesus have us approach politics? How are we to answer that question as we keep in mind that Jesus told his followers about loving their enemies and doing good?
Prayer: O God whose love stretches across every barrier and boundary, we pray for help in living our lives with the same kind of love. Please allow your Holy Spirit to assist us for it will not be easy. Amen.
