Scripture: Ephesians 4:3
…and make an effort to preserve the unity of the Spirit with the peace that ties you together.

Thought for the Day: This is the next verse in the 4th chapter of Ephesians. After Paul has encouraged humility, gentleness and patience, and after he has told the community to accept each other in love, he turns to the importance of the community finding unity and peace. The phrase we translate as “make an effort to preserve” has the word Tereo in the original Greek text. It describes someone who attends to a task carefully. Those who are humble, gentle and patient – those who accept each other in love – are the very people who are attending very carefully to the task of unity. Let’s make every effort to preserve the unity of the Spirit, and let us be mindful that such unity is going to happen only when we pay attention to the task carefully.

Prayer: I will do my best, O Gracious Father, to attend carefully and intentionally to the work of unity. My starting place will be with Jesus whose life I will strive to emulate. Amen.
