Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: Psalm 58:2
No: in your hearts you plan injustice; your hands do violence on the earth.

Thought for the Day: The author is asking a question of the powerful who control the lives of others – controlling them in an unfair and unjust way. There are many who today wield power over other human beings. Just recently, I heard more stories of young girls/women (11, 12 and 14) who had been manipulated and then sexually exploited. As you have heard me and others say, this horrific stuff occurs very close to home. In the month of June, you will have an opportunity to learn more and find places to be involved. To be honest, I have not been sleeping well for months now. The images and stories continue to haunt me. Our children – those who are most vulnerable – are being sold and abused by those whose hearts are unjust. They are bringing violence to the earth and to our neighborhoods. I believe God is gracious, but I cannot imagine God being happy with people of faith choosing to ignore this problem. On Sunday, June 4, Cypress Creek Christian Church will show a movie on this issue. The movie will begin at 5:30pm, and we will have a representative from the organization Free the Captives who will answer questions following the movie. Later in the month, there will also be an educational opportunity as we look at the problem close up with a van tour in our neighborhood. There will also be opportunities to get involved, whether that is in direct services to those who are in the healing process after being brought out of human trafficking, taking on the brothels in our own neighborhoods, or trying to offer hope to the women who are still caught in the web of unjust power that is known as trafficking.

Prayer: Injustice cannot wait another minutes! You, Lord, know that behind the word injustice are young men and women, boys and girls, who are sold and abused. Let us not rest until our city, our country and this planet are free from every form of slavery. Amen.
