Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: Galatians 2:1
Then after fourteen years I went up again to Jerusalem with Barnabas, taking Titus along with me.

Thought for the Day: Do you remember being called into the teachers office as a young person, or maybe more recently, do you remember being called into the boss’s office? You may not have had any idea why the meeting was requested, but just the possibilities were the catalyst for great anxiety. Here in chapter 2, Paul was describing a meeting in Jerusalem with those he once attempted to kill. And even though it had been 14 years since Paul’s transformative moment along the road to Damascus, he was still at odds with the Apostles in Jerusalem on some important theological matters. In moments like this – when you are uncertain about the outcome of a meeting – it is always good to take a few friends who will defend you. Barnabas and Titus not only had witnessed Paul’s work, but they were people who understood firsthand the power of grace to accept and use them. The Apostles in Jerusalem might have appeared to have scripture on their side, but there was and there continues to be something very important about living testimonies that stretch our perception and interpretation of scripture. Who can provide a witness to the work of Christ in your life? Who can give a powerful testimony that might challenge previous thoughts about what the Holy Spirit could or could not do?

Prayer: Is there something in my life worth telling? Work in me, O Lord, so that my life might just inspire a testimony worth telling. Amen.
