Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: John 14:2
My Father’s house has room to spare. If that weren’t the case, would I have told you that I’m going to prepare a place for you?

Thought for the Day: These are some of the most familiar words offered at a funeral. I love the image it portrays, and I really like the wording found in the above translation – The Common English Bible. The King James Version used the word mansions, but the idea remains the same. In the passage, I am drawn to the idea that there is room to spare. That is language I have often heard used when someone invited my family to stay in their home. “Come and stay with us. We have room to spare.” It is the language of hospitality that creates comfort for the invited. When there is room to spare, you’re not left feeling as if you have put anyone out. It also portrays the idea that there is more than enough – that when I arrive, it will leave plenty of room for anyone else. For me, that is a beautiful depiction of the heavenly realm. The last thing Jesus ever wanted to do was to suggest, like so many religious people have in both the past and the present, that heaven has limited seating.

Prayer: Our minds work in the limits of time and space, but Gracious God, you are limited by nothing. When we suggest that we cannot squeeze even one more in, you laugh and invite us all. Thank you! Amen.
