Scripture: Genesis 28:11-12
Jacob came to a certain place and stayed there for the night, because the sun had set. Taking one of the stones of the place, he put it under his head and lay down in that place. And he dreamed that there was a ladder set up on the earth, the top of it reaching to heaven; and the angels of God were ascending and descending on it.
Thought for the Day: According to the Great Midrash (one of the Jewish commentaries on the scriptures) from the medieval times, Jacob’s ladder is a symbol of the human life. We live firmly rooted on the earth, but we strive and struggle to know and live the high values of heaven. God continues to send us divine messengers who help us live on the earth, yet with the values found in the holy and heavenly vision. In a similar way, Jesus will announce the manifestation of God’s Kingdom here on earth. The Kingdom manifests itself when faithful people live firmly in this world, while always striving and struggling for the ways of God. Let us ask for as many of those divine messengers as we need to make heaven visible on earth.
Prayer: Help me be your bridge, Mighty God, between what is and what could be. Amen.
