Ecclesiological Etchings

Scripture: Galatians 3:23-24
Before faith came, we were guarded under the Law, locked up until faith that was coming would be revealed, so that the Law became our custodian until Christ so that we might be made righteous by faith.

Thought for the Day: Have you ever known a person who was truly overwhelmed by a heavy burden? Maybe you are the person who has known a spiritual or emotional weight that simply would not let go of your life. Paul found this in his interpretation of Torah – it appeared to him that God had very specific requirements for a person to live the righteous life. Paul knew the Torah (the law or the teachings), yet he was unable to fulfill them. In Romans, he will write: I don’t know what I’m doing, because I don’t do what I want to do. Instead, I do the thing that I hate. Often the guilt and shame of one’s failures will consume that individual to the point of giving up. Paul points to the grace of God in Jesus Christ as the window through which we see the heart of God. What we discover is a God who understands, and though we will never live to the high standards seen in Jesus himself, we discover that we have a right-relationship with God because of what God has done. This liberates us from the feelings of failure – never to the level of perfection – but to a life of passionate and persistent Christ-like living.

Prayer: When failure attempt to define me, O Merciful God, provide me a good word that reconnects me with your defining grace. Amen.
