Scripture: Exodus 12:17
You shall observe the festival of unleavened bread, for on this very day I brought your companies out of the land of Egypt: you shall observe this day throughout your generations as a perpetual ordinance.
Thought for the Day: On July 4, 1826, Thomas Jefferson and John Adams both died. These two signers of the Declaration of Independence would not only die on the same day, but it was the 50th Anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. At times they were political rivals, but they ended their lives as friends. Even though it is just another day on a calendar, the memories and stories we attached to a day can be very powerful. The Israelites understood the power of celebrating important happenings, for such celebration shaped a new generation in the pivotal stories that gave the community its values.
Prayer: Lord, let us celebrate those history shaping events, and in doing so, glean the best of what the past can teach us. Amen.
